SIR – If the sub prime global financial meltdown had been caused by someone in Brussels we wouldn’t have had this muted reaction from all the usual USA worshippers who write in the newspaper. They would have had much more to say about it and the desirability of UK independence.

This crisis could end like the aftermath of the first Wall Street disaster in 1929. The rest of the world could be thrown into chaos while the good old USA could, once again, stride out of the ashes in an even stronger position than before.

Can we British really become independent of all this? Can we leave the EU, or control immigration, or limit how much public money is devoted to following the USA into one doomed foreign policy escapade after another? Not without clearing it with Washington and Wall Street we can’t!

We can vote until we are blue or red in the face but it won’t make a ha’penny’s worth of difference to what goes on around us.

So let’s forget about the great Lib-Lab con trick and form a government of national unity.

It’s time to start a process of political and economic truth-telling and reconciliation – before Europe ends up revisiting the awful events of the 1930s and 40s.
