SIR – Regarding the UKIP wreath that I laid on the war memorial, I have laid similar wreaths for Armistices Day for many years past.

UKIP buy wreaths direct from the Royal British Legion and with great respect these are duly laid at Droitwich, Malvern, Evesham and other places.

I lay the one at Worcester.

I have attached similar messages in previous years, but these have never caused an outcry before. They are my own personal message and not in any way disrespectful to those who gave their lives for our present freedom – which is rapidly being eroded by the EU and our government.

My father was seriously injured on the Somme and discharged only two weeks after his 18th birthday.

Other relations were at Normandy, Arnhem, and one was a Japanese prisoner of war, so my feelings run deep on our loss of freedom. All I ask is: for what and why have they died?

I am patriotic to my bones. My message was very much more in sorrow than in anger over their tragic loss.

JOHN C BUTTERFIELD,

Worcester.
