SIR – A ban on ‘wonky veg’ sales in our shops has now been lifted so curvy cucumbers and forked carrots will be back on the menu. The European Commission agreed that this is a law that’s totally unnecessary – it’s a complete victory for common sense. This means that 20 per cent less fruit and veg will be thrown away before it even gets to the shops. Further, good news is that Euro-MPs have backed a £420 million scheme that will enable every child in our area and across the EU to have free fruit and vegetables at school. This will help challenge growing obesity levels and prevent disease in later life. I am pleased that there will be an emphasis on seasonal, locally-grown and organic fruit but we also need significant educational programmes in schools and to get back to teaching children how to cook in order to raise awareness about healthy eating.
FELICITY NORMAN,
Prospective Green Party Euro-MP.
