Sir – With the reluctance of banks to loan money – even between themselves – and the construction industry and related trades all in dire trouble, a different approach is needed.
I remember years ago the council offered mortgages.
This could be worth a look as councils backed with government money would provide more confidence than the banks. Maybe it could limit itself to firsttime buyers or be selective in its time period, as well as being competitive.
This could get the housing cycle moving again. A buoyant construction industry has always produced a strong economy.
MIKE FRANCIS,
Worcester.
