SIR – John Phillpott’s ignorance of humanists and humanism is obviously festering nicely in his breast after his ill-informed tantrum against the secular life that humanists lead (Why can’t humanists be more human? November 1).

Firstly, humanism is neither a religion nor a cult. It is a life stance held dear by millions of agnostics, freethinkers and atheists worldwide.

Secondly, there is no overbearing dogma to muddy the waters in humanism, although we largely champion human spirit above a socalled holy spirit.

I have the pleasure of knowing many fine upstanding humanists doing great deeds in their communities and whose only crime is, to put it frankly, not buying the idea of a super ego in the sky who craves constant adoration. Mr Phillpott is still perfectly free to daydream of playing harp with Hendrix in the heaven of his choice but don’t knock humanists because they prefer not to waste their time doing the same.

JED KING,

Crowle.
