SIR – Sainsbury’s have got it spot on with their wonky veg campaign against the EU-wide ban on supermarkets selling misshapen fruit and vegetables.
The joy of seeing an ugly carrot, bent parsnip or tomato with a blob on the side really is no problem for the average consumer – it is a source of amusement if anything.
Shockingly, up to 20 per cent of all of our fruit and vegetables are thrown away because of this regulation on the shape and size of produce.
Nature isn’t able to conform to perfect shapes. The EU commission is looking into relaxing the rules, which means we could see odd shapes and cheaper prices on our shelves in the near future.
Sadly, some fruit and vegetables will still be covered by this draconian regulation. If you wish to add your name to the petition for more more shapes of fruit and vegetables then e-mail your name and postcode to westmidlands@ greenparty.org.uk.
