SIR – The sad saga of Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross is systematic of the fall in standards not only at the BBC, but throughout our national life.

People of my age wistfully remember the days of Sir John Reith’s immaculate leadership. In those days real comedians such as Arthur Askey and Tommy Handley had us all rolling about in the aisles without any reference to sex or lavatories. The remunerations which these wonderful characters received was relatively modest. They were operating long before the advent of the absurd and regrettable ‘celebrity cult’.
