SIR – It’s only a few weeks since the Tory conference where David Cameron and George Osborne were blaming Gordon Brown for the banking mess. I don’t think either of them had any idea of the mess the banks were in, which is partly a legacy of the Thatcher era.

Instead of running Mr Brown down they should thank him for sorting the mess. That is what we want, a man of action, not amateurs who have got more rabbit than Sainsbury’s.
