SIR – Congratulations to Mark Starr (Letters, October 10), for pointing out the disgraceful and iniquitous arrest of an Australian who has broken no laws in this country or his own. This is another misuse of anti-terrorism laws, this time by the EU.
We have seen many cases of abuse of these laws in this country by the police and local government.
In the same issue, Mr Bushill-Matthews MEP praises the EU for lowering mobile charges. Obviously, he regards this as more important than human rights.
Perhaps Mike Foster could offer us a defence of this action explaining why we are all much safer now, even if a few have to go to jail, even when innocent.
ALAN COOMBS,
Worcester.
