SIR – Claire Fry’s article about the fate of Jack and Olive Gearhart reminded me of my own courting days.
I spent two years doing National Service from 1950- 52. After square bashing at RAF Hereford, I spent most of my service on a dream posting to RAF Exeter (now Exeter airport). I drew a short straw though when half the camp were sent on a six-week exercise in the autumn of 1951.
As we alighted from the train at our destination, Pershore, with the rain pelting off the station roof, we all thought what a dump.
However, we were transported to RAF Pershore when our spirits were lifted by a notice advertising a camp dance that night. Transport for the local girls was laid on as usual, and as we entered the hall from opposite ends our eyes met and we felt an instant bond between us.
We married in 1955 and yes, we too believe in fate.
PHIL PEGLER, Worcester.
