SIR – Some years ago three experienced further education lecturers and a woman county councillor were tasked with investigating the industrial training and job knowledge of the less-motivated in statutory education within Worcestershire.
We visited a further education establishment.
We discovered a motor vehicle specialist lecturer also taught bricklaying and plumbing.
As a former City and Guilds examiner and professional trainer of long experience I was horrified, as were my county councillor colleagues.
I have expressed grave concerns in respect of government means of delivering the recent ‘diplomas’ in high schools.
Imagine the feelings of experienced and qualified ‘wrinklies’ on reading an advert for: ‘Teacher of DT/ Construction MPS, who has the ability to teach bricklaying and carpentry, ICT literate’. The blind leading the blind?
TOM WAREING, Redditch.
