SIR – I agree entirely with your comment on October 3. Professional footballers should set an example to youngsters who worship them.
The BBC’s Match of the Day often brings out the worst in players. They whine over nothing when they fall. The referee is never right. Players often argue with officials and youngsters watching may follow their example. It would do professional soccer players good if they all had a spell on loan to rugby union clubs. They might learn what team spirit is about.
Rugby players get harder knocks and come up for a scrap but soon resume the game as if nothing had happened.
It is more pleasurable to be a spectator at rugby games.
PHIL PEGLER, Worcester.
