SIR – Bob Churchill and myself (October 4) would agree that liking and disliking are facts of life and we can go about them by means of civility, a sense of humour and no sulks.

On that score we must say that the word prejudice gets overvalued generally.

My own tone has always been courteous.

For the sake of brevity I shall bat for God straight away. I find that religion in general is innate and inborn in mankind.

We are all free to take it or not and to disagree upon forms and contents – still, refusing to acknowledge its presence is illogical, misleading and, above all, unscientific.

People will not accept they are just chemical compounds lasting for a number of earthly orbits around the sun and then dissolving into nothingness.

Religious faith and belief are not credulity, they are speculative audacity, intuition, vision, trust and perseverance.

Religion is a theoretical and an ethical framework.

JOHN E IEBOLE, Worcester.
