SIR – It is good to hear the county council is considering how better use can be made of our railway tracks.

I had suggested a similar three-way railcar service in Worcester about 15 years ago, when you could drive across the city in a few minutes for just a few pence worth of petrol.

Sadly at peak times, it can take 30 minutes in stop-start traffic, consuming pounds of precious fuel these days.

Oh well, better late than never.

I would also point out, that trams, as being suggested may be OK for the new halts where passengers either board from street level or a low platform, but this would not be of much use when they pick up or set down passengers at Worcester Foregate Street or Shrub Hill stations, where the platforms already exist but are of standard rail height, which are likely to be too high for any tram I have seen.

Hence this is why a railcar is the answer, similar to the ones used on the Welsh valley lines.

The project is interesting, but once again can only be succesful when Worcester Parkway is built, feeding passengers in and out of the city and south Worcestershire.

When is the county going to get the financial support from central government, Department of Transport and Network Rail? Or will Worcester and south Worcestershire continue to be one of the have nots?

Perhaps Mike Foster and Peter Luff might like to tell us?

JEREMY DAVIES, Worcester.
