SIR – Colin Layland asks (August 21) if we had waste food collections. We did, but I remember it was left-over from the war where waste food was collected in bins to be boiled, thus sterilising it for feeding pigs. I believe the practice discontinued until the mid to late 1950s.
Peter Alcock,
Upton Snodsbury.
