SIR – Despite our MP pushing in favour of a new super clinic in Worcester, a recent independent report by the King’s Fund found they would be a huge waste of money with significant risks to patient care. Evidence exists that it may actually decrease patient care and they are unlikely to ease pressure on NHS hospitals. It found one in five surgeries face closure.

Given that 90 per cent of all patient contact with the NHS is through primary care visits this route leads to a detached health care and patient inconvenience.

If people believe they will walk in off the street and see a doctor instantly they are deluding themselves. With several thousand students set to descend on Castle Street it will be highly likely that a several hour queue will ensue.

The report also showed concern for housebound or immobile patients who may have to travel into this clinic to receive basic tests which are now performed in their home by the GP surgeries network of district nurses and home visits. Eight out of 10 GPs said these poly clinics will damage patient care.

People of Worcester, don’t sell yourself short when it comes to healthcare.

M Swiers,

Worcester.
