SIR – When we established the three-tier system, it was agreed by all interested parties that for sound educational reasons, no middle school should exceed 600 pupils. The system worked well.

Then weak political chameleons allowed educational entrepreneurs to recruit up to 750 pupils.

Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland too, have all sensibly ditched league tables.

Now we have this Sats fiasco. Within reason, subject to objective and adequate inspection systems, I now believe that we should return our statutory education to the experts – the teachers.
