SIR – Having spent a good deal of time on riversides in other counties I can’t help feeling we are missing a trick in terms of cross generative enjoyment of the city’s remaining riverside?

Accepting the very beautiful cathedral section and that the rowing club and canoe club quite rightly, along with the racecourse, occupy a good deal of space, can we ask if our council leaders are making the best of what little we have left?

Is it really good sense that the prime site of Croft Road lorry park should exist in that location? This is prime leisure land at the riverside that has massive potential.

In addition while I recognise the urgent need for flood defences in Hylton Road, was it really necessary to pull down dozens of mature and healthy trees and import a clay mud bank, effectively hiding the river completely?

Are we really to accept that, outstanding though the concrete architecture of Hylton Road is, that this will be the most dazzling focal point of a major route in the city? I wonder if the politicians responsible considered a more modular option of flood defence similar to the one installed in Bewdley?

It can slot into place for the two of three weeks of the year that it is required and leaves the surroundings unadulterated for everyone to enjoy.
