SIR - We are more and more more dictated by the computer systems used by banks, utilities and virtually every other organisation that we deal with.

What’s worse, those organisations seem unable to control them.

My latest was having to cancel my bank card as I seemed to have lost it. It did turn up the next day, tucked into a shirt pocket dumped in the laundry basket.

So I phoned my bank.

Could I not, please, use my card again now I have it?

No way. So I have to endure up to two weeks before I get my new card and pin number. It doesn’t help at all that this bank has no branches in Worcester.

Why all this? Because someone pushed a button and set in motion a totally mechanical and mindless process in which humans are denied any say.

George Orwell’s 1984 was not a warning about Big Brother. It’s the blueprint for the Big Brother world we now live in.
