Dear Editor
(I write following Bob Cobb’s letter in the Journal March 9, 2023).
I must congratulate Bob Cobb on spotting a new marketing opportunity for the town as a new Las Vegas with all its flashing traffic lights!
Unfortunately, the council has little opportunity to increase the number as that is in the hands of Worcestershire Highways.
I’m sure that Bob would agree with me that visiting Las Vegas, as I did once many moons ago, is an interesting experience, but not a model for a modern Evesham.
How do we plan for a modern town, where all modes of transport are catered for, but the car is not dominant and Active Travel is the primary method of travel, at least within Evesham itself?
The call for going back to the two-way Swan Lane option would result in further vehicle domination, besides that it would do nothing to improve transit times.
I believe the only rational way forward is one that invovles a change in National Legislation on Road Design and regulation, along the lines of the way the Swiss do things.
Hopefully, Evesham will become a “20’sPlenty” area, but that would only be a small part of any change.
We need a system that will enbale the abandonment of at least most of the flashing Las Vegas traffic lights.
New invention is not required, we just need to copy an existing one from elsewhere!
Robert Hale
Evesham Town Councillor
