First we are told that nurses turn to food banks in order to supplement their income.
Then these same nurses, we understand, need to feed on scraps of food left over by patients in hospital, in their fight for better pay and conditions.
Now we are led to believe that “starving school children are stealing food from supermarkets”, in order to survive (Worcester News, February 1).
In my experience, I can honestly say I’ve yet to witness suspicious looking school children, posing as Dickensian street urchins, scurrying from supermarkets clutching their ‘five a day’ essentials.
Chocolate bars, bags of crisps etc, now that’s a different matter.
To anyone who grew up in the ‘40s, when there were real food shortages and rationing, the growth of food banks today beggars belief.
Offer something for free and you’ll get takers.
