SIR - With the furore that has "gripped" the attention of the country regarding the abolition of the 10p tax band and the fact that "all of a sudden" it has been realised that it affects millions of people, I feel that both of the main parties, Tory and Labour, have buried their heads in the sand until recently.
I wrote to Gordon Brown, then Chancellor, just after his Budget in 2007 commenting on the fact that low-paid and part-time workers would be unfairly penalised with his "giveaway" tax benefit of a 20p tax band and received a reply from the Treasury stating the usual official waffle and not answering the question.
This was forwarded to MP Peter Luff in May last year along with the original letter to Gordon Brown, hoping for some action. None was forthcoming.
If notice had been taken of the many people who highlighted this problem after the Budget, we wouldn't be in the situation today.
DAVID HIBBITT, Wichenford.
