SIR - I was interested to read John Phillpott's article (Worcester News, March 19) about his encounter with the gipsy and the broken twig left to tell fellow travellers if the household was friendly or not. My origins are from a small village in Staffordshire, where my mother told us a similar story, except the traveller in question would leave a mark on the gate or fence, to signify if the household were friendly or not. I must admit that I never did check the truth of the story, but believed what my mother told us.

Perhaps other readers have had similar experienced to ours.

JANET RAUSCH, Malvern.
