This is not strictly true. It is more a reflection of-out-of-term child care rather than the school run.

My wife and I take turns having annual leave when the kids are off school. This means there is a car less on the road that week, irrespective of if we are doing a drop off at school on the way. If my kids went by bus, I would still be on the road. Therefore if hundreds of people are off work then there is bound to be less traffic.

We take one of our kids to school by car by necessity and I am amazed at the number of people, pensioners in particular, who tell us how in their day they walked to school.

I remember those days and you would also never see a pensioner in a car.

Look at store car parks in the week. You struggle to see a driver less than 60.
