SIR - In response to Coun Buckley's letter in your paper, April 10, I am saddened he uses children to make political points in this the run-up period to local elections in a third of the city.

Can I reinforce that some home-to-school transport changes are being proposed so that all assessments for children with special educational needs (SEN) are done on the same basis - currently a very small number are done differently. The basic undertaking of the county council is to ensure that all SEN children who need transport will continue to get assistance.

Readers will also know to sustain the high costs of looking after very vulnerable youngsters and concentrating on areas of deprivation, to narrow the poverty gap, we have had to take some hard decisions such as asking the outdoor education centres to pull together a business plan that does not require a taxpayer subsidy.

I make no apology for supporting vulnerable children and young people, for ensuring we run a tight ship at the county council, for ensuring we have the funds to support those who cannot support themselves.
