SIR - If the powers that be can blithely fly a lit candle from Beijing to London for some event of which few will witness it beggars belief that some MP, councillor or member of a quango will dictate to me that I should do all that I can to reduce my footprint'.

It is hinted that I will be penalised if I go to an excess in my daily lifestyle. In fact in some areas they already do impose a tax. But they can fly a massive plane thousands of miles to London to maintain some outdated ritual and it does not stop there.
