SIR - Ian Habbitts (Letters, April 11) mentions how the school run is causing all the tailbacks.
This is not strictly true. It is more a reflection of out- of-term child care rather than the much bemoaned school run.
Like most parents, my wife and I take turns having annual leave when the kids are off school. This means there is a car less on the road that week, irrespective of whether we are doing a drop off at school on the way. If my kids went by bus, I would still be on the road Therefore, if hundreds of people are off work then there is bound to be less traffic.
Incidently, we take one of our kids to school by car through necessity rather than choice and I am amazed at the number of people, pensioners in particular, who like to tell us how in their day they walked to school.
Well, I remember those days and I don't remember ever seeing a pensioner in a car. Take a look at the supermarket car parks in the week now and you will struggle to see a driver less than 60 years old.
