SIR - This letter is to Richard Udall, the New Labour prospective candidate for the St John's ward in Worcester.

Now that you have been chosen by your party to fight the election in May, will you be telling the good people of St John's your true beliefs about democracy in this country?

Will you be telling them how happy you would be to give away the sovereignty of this great nation to some faceless person in Europe, saying that anyone who opposes the EC is still fighting the Second World War? I find your statement so insulting to the men and women who fought to protect this country.

And where is the referendum on the EC constitution that your party promised us at the last general election?

Are you and your pro-European friends worried that you will lose the vote?

So, when you knock on the doors of the electorate in St John's with your big broad grin, please tell them the truth about what you really believe and not just what you think they should hear.

COLIN LAYLAND, Worcester.
