SIR - It is great to know that your correspondent Joyce Rose (February 4) thinks that Mary Whitehouse had the right idea.
The organisation founded by Mrs Whitehouse in 1965 is actively campaigning for better film and television standards that sustain respect and civility in our society.
The real problem is overcoming the intransigence of the broadcasters and regulators who ought to respond more positively to expressions of public concern.
Of course, there are many excellent and praiseworthy programmes on TV but it is film and drama that present the biggest challenge. In the last 10 years we have monitored over 1,000 films shown on the five main TV channels.
The most commonly portrayed violence involves the use of firearms and offensive weapons and it is precisely crimes of this sort that have become such a serious problem.
We invite your readers to contact us to obtain a handy directory, free of charge, which includes all the contact information necessary to enable people to make their voices heard.
Meanwhile, we are pressing the broadcasters to fulfil their public commitment to listening to what we have to say - and to acting upon it!
