SIR - Most of our debates are based on the belief that British voters can influence what happens in the world around us. I believe that is no longer true. While the media circus diverts us with stories of sleaze, our Parliament is supposedly debating Europe. The truth is that the chamber of the House of Commons is almost empty and our media are telling us very little about it.

Whether it's the wholly undemocratic slide into a ruinously expensive EU, or the endless unwinnable wars we fight, or the fortune we spend on bribing supposedly friendly dictators, or the thousands of poor immigrants who seem free just to arrive and stay here - no one in Britain has any significant influence over what happens to our nation any longer.

What we need is an Orange Revolution or pro- democracy movement that ignores the meaningless party politics of old and starts asking for control of our nation back in our hands after decades of voters being systematically deceived, betrayed and robbed.
