SIR - As I warned last summer , and was criticised by Philip Bushill-Mattthews MEP for so doing, the EU Environment Commissioner has now admitted the EU did not foresee the problems caused by its policy to get 10 per cent of Europe's road fuel needs from biofuel. The rush to biofuel has meant that food prices are rising dramatically and there have been food riots in several Third World countries because the price of basic food stuffs such as wheat, soya, corn, have been priced out of their reach. Simultaneously, the destruction of the rain forest has gained pace to allow the growing of palm oil. The EU Commissioner has now said it would be better to miss the biofuel targets than achieve it by continuing to harm the hungry and poor or damage the environment.
I look forward to hearing from Mr Bushill-Matthews that he accepts this policy as is the case with many EU policies, was ill-thought out.
