SIR - David Candler was right when he wrote that Sir Winston Churchill was keen to get the continental countries of Europe closer enough together to prevent future conflict, but Churchill did not envisage for one moment that Britain should be part of it.

This was made very clear in his now famous speech on the subject.

He was too outward looking towards America and the wider world than to confine Britain to the continent.

Churchill had just led this country through a war to prevent foreigners from governing this country.
