SIR - The march in Pershore on Saturday, January 5, about the Christmas lights in Pershore was, in my view, totally unnecessary.

It's true that the council had concerns about the cost of re-instating the old lights; we do have to be accountable for our expenditure.

However, the council made a decision to go for re-instatement if at all possible, and, to find a way of covering the costs.

Therefore it is a complete red herring to claim that the lights were not back in time for Christmas because of money.

Neither the council or the Liberal Democrats in our election communications ever promised the lights would go back. What we did say was that if it was the wish of the residents of Pershore that the old lights go back up we would do our best to make that happen. There are no broken promises.

We have and are still trying to resolve the situation. If it proves impossible to put the lights back for health and safety reasons then we will have to decide what to do about that pretty soon.

I agree that this year's lights were disappointing.

COUNCILLOR GAYNOR AMPHLETT, Pershore Town and Wychavon District Council.
