SIR - David Chandler wrote that Winston Churchill was an advocate of the European Union.

While it's true that Churchill did support the idea of a united Europe, he didn't actually anticipate the UK being part of it, hence his comment: "Given the choice of Europe or the open sea I'd take the open sea any day."

When this country's public service infrastructure is eventually swamped under the weight of mass European immigration, as is already happening in parts of south east England, perhaps the likes of Mr Chandler will wake up and recognise the reality of how EU membership is affecting this country, while the UK remains a country that is.
