SIR - A recent supermarket survey recognised the positive decisions made by supermarkets to improve the welfare of animals.
Marks and Spencer won compassionate supermarket of the year 2007, with Waitrose in second place, followed by Co-op, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Morrisons, Somerfield and lastly Asda.
Sainsbury's also won two awards - best volume retailer and most improved supermarket 2007. All results are available at ciwf.org.uk/supermarkets.
Supermarkets are now changing, and now it's up to us the customers to make sure this momentum is carried forward.
Our supermarket choices can now have a real impact on how farm animals are reared and treated.
So, let's use our purchasing power to make responsible choices about the food we buy.
By choosing free range or organic products we are supporting a growing movement towards higher animal welfare farming.
When purchasing animal products, beware of terms like farm fresh which are purely a marketing ploy and mean nothing in animal welfare terms.
If you cannot find free range or organic products in your supermarket, then please ask for them. Let supermarkets know that you care.
