SIR - I was amazed to read in your paper (October 1) that the plans to convert the old Redhill Baptist Chapel were thrown out because planning officer Alan Coleman objected to the demolition of the "original Victorian porch".
I have been a member of this church (now St Peter's Baptist church) for 25 years. The porch is not Victorian - I remember it being built.
The original porch was within the main body of the building and the current porch was added in order to make more space for the growing congregation.
I'm sure if the planning department were to consult the records at St Peter's Baptist church they would discover the exact date it was built.
While I have no particular views on the plans submitted, I hope the planning team will keep the main structure of this historic building unlike the plans for Kempsey Baptist Chapel which looks set for demolition.
