SIR - As one who spent a sizeable chunk of my childhood exploring the lesser known passages and alcoves of Worcester Cathedral, I was particularly interested in the letter from L K Edwards (October 1).

I certainly knew about the old charnel house but had never succeeded in gaining admission.

I remember how the Sea Cadet bounty boys undertook wartime fire watching duty and particularly remember the clerk of works, Reg Smith who had chased me away many a time.

I recollect that Reg was himself the son of an earlier clerk of works and had been raised with an intimate understanding of the building and some of the fascinating stories associated with parts of the cathedral the public seldom gets to see.

The manner of his departure should not detract from the fact that we lost a valuable fount of information.

How I wish he had taken the trouble to write a book.

JOHN HINTON, Worcester.
