SIR - The coverage given to the Woofers' (now the Mercian Regiment) current tour in Afghanistan by the Worcester News has been excellent. However, the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards is also currently serving in Helmand, and has, sadly, suffered fatal casualties.
Worcester is, of course, a prime Grenadier recruiting area, and so doubtless many local Grenadiers are out there in harm's way. In 1999, the Grenadier or 1st Regiment of Foot Guards was given freedom of entry to the Faithful City with bayonets fixed, drums beating and colours flying'.
So, spare a thought for the men of the Household Division, including our local Guardsmen, and wish them God speed for a safe return.
DILIP SARKAR, Worcester.
