SIR - This letter is in support of your correspondent J C Butterfield (Letters, June 21), who thankfully and rightly supports the discipline and skills shown by thousands of young men who enhanced the Armed Forces of this country in time of need and filled the breach for many years.

I had the privilege of helping train some of those lads. They came in, from all walks of life, with no choice but to knuckle down to the life of a soldier, sailor or airman.

They came out after 12 weeks trained and disciplined and stood side by side with their regular servicemen and fought, when called to do so, to preserve the freedom that such ungrateful people as Mr Hinton now enjoys.

I hope the families of the lads who now lie peacefully in Malaya, Korea, Aden, Palestine and so on have not been upset by the audacity of Mr Hinton. We that are left to remember will always be proud of what National Servicemen did - there are quite a few of us.

Brian S Williams, Hindlip, Worcester.
