SIR - Labour councillors who are posturing over the move of the post office to a venue that will have access by stairs and a single lift - which could be seen as discrimination of the disabled and elderly - should send their strong letters of protest and criticism not to WH Smith and the Post Office, but to Alistair Darling, their own Government minister. He is responsible for decisions on closures and criteria of distances people should have to travel to use a post office. In the cities it is up to 1 mile, the rural areas 3 miles and in more isolated areas 9 miles or more.
Our MP Mike Foster, when back in Westminster, should perhaps drop in to see Mr Darling and get the briefing he is obviously in need of.
But where is the voice of the councillors who supposedly also represent union members?
WHSmith has avoided the question of existing staff and wages, saying it would train staff (perhaps on WHSmith rates of pay) up to a satisfactory standard within two weeks, but also saw the need for experienced overseers standing by.
