SIR - For generations, barometers and thermometers have used mercury to measure change. Now the EU has ruled that this is potentially dangerous and must be stopped - people might break them and they are hard to dispose of.
As a result, UK manufacturers employing hundreds of people will have to close down.
At the same time, the EU is pressing ahead urgently with the introduction of low energy light bulbs - all of which contain mercury.
Won't these be even more difficult to dispose of in such vast numbers?
Either mercury is dangerous or it is not.
