Sir - So, Tony Blair in order to distract from his own record as Prime Minister is now blaming the press.

Blair is a man who came to power in 1997 on the wings of the media and, with Alistair Campbell and Peter Mandelson, built an empire of hundreds of press officers within Whitehall to employ fierce censorship and control over anything that happened within New Labour.

MPs were frightened to speak before looking at their pagers, even New Labour city and county councillors had to be on message and use media enquiry forms.

They say you can live or die by the sword, but the pen is far mightier than the sword, and it is the pens of the press that will write Mr Blair's political epitaph.
