SIR - I am not at all sure that re-introduction of National Service would prove the panacea Stanley Parr recommends (Letters, June 5).
During my time as a Navy reservist, I once found myself in charge of a body of National Servicemen who thought it a huge joke to be under orders from someone wearing a reserve' flash.
There were attempts to exploit the situation but in no time I had them doubling up and down on the parade ground.
A official came hurrying towards me from the direction of the Admiral's office and said: "Whatever do you think you are doing? The old man is doing his nut. We will have them all writing letters of complaint to their MPs."
So National Service might not instill the discipline you hope.
John Hinton,
Worcester.
