SIR - I am sometimes accused of coming from another planet but the letter from Mr Moran, of Droitwich (May 30), quite surprised me.

He points out what he sees as benefits of being in the EU. They rank up there with Alice in Wonderland on the fiction list.

To respond briefly to just a few of his points: Safer and cheaper flights: Nonsense, these would happen anyway and the EU wants to impose huge taxes on all flights in the name of global warming.

Student exchange programmes: Rubbish, nothing to do with the EU as they were going strong in the 1940s and 50s.

The single market: The Common Market long preceded the EU bureaucracy of today.

Peace in Europe: This has more to do with the millions who gave their lives to defend Europe in two world wars and which are still in living memory. Parts of the EU are still fighting away, regardless.

Regional funds - Great! We give them £12 billion and they give us back £2 billion with strings on how to spend our own money.

Cheaper phone calls: Yes, if you live on the continent, but the loss incurred on roaming charges will actually mean an increase to phone users in this country.

This is my message from planet Earth - I wish God speed to planet Droitwich.

Stanley D Parr, Pershore.
