SIR - On the Continent, banks can clear a cheque in 24 hours. In the UK it takes a minimum of five days. Does this mean that the banks gain interest on your money for four days every time you pay out or pay in a cheque?

If there are a few million cheques processed every week, how many millions of pounds do the banks make in profit on your money?

Is this legalised daylight robbery?
