SIR - I wonder if we shall ever get the date of the first concoction by Lea & Perrins of their famous sauce satisfactorily fixed?
In an article in the Worcester News (May 30), this date is given as 1835, when Lord Sandys called into their shop in Broad Street.
The problem with this is that there wasn't a Lord Sandys in 1835. The second Lord Sandys succeeded his mother in the peerage in 1836: she had been created Baroness Sandys in her own right in 1802. Since she was Marchioness of Downshire by marriage, her son was known as Lord Arthur Hill until he succeeded to the family's peerage in 1836.
