SIR - The recent letter on garden grabbing development seems to have taken no account of the people who sell their large houses to builders.

Often they are elderly people who find it difficult to maintain the house and face horrific council tax and heating bills due to the size of their property.

It may also be their sole valuable asset. Given that the expenses of running such a property may deter younger people too, selling to a developer may be the only way make the most of their asset to ensure a secure and comfortable old age for the owners.
