SIR - Regarding the picture sent in by Jean Harrison (Worcester News, May 21). The weed in question is not a weed at all. It looks to be the larval web of the small ermine moth.
In these parts they tend to lay their eggs on spindle in hedgerows.
When the caterpillars hatch, they spin silken webs like spiders' webs.
The webs containing thousands of caterpillars will often spread 20 or 30 metres along a hedgerow.
