SIR - Mark Starr's latest letter attacking the EU (Letters, May 9) complains that "the EU has decided" that biofuels should comprise at least 10 per cent of all transport fuel by 2020, and claims that this will inevitably destroy the rain forests etc.
Firstly, the EU that has decided this consists of the elected governments of all the member states, and these governments - including the UK Government - have unanimously volunteered this target as a good idea.
Secondly, our local farmers think it is a good idea too. I have confirmed with the National Farmers Union that this agreement is most welcome and that our farmers look forward keenly to the extra opportunities this decision opens up for them.
We need to get away from fossil fuels in general, and dependence on Russian energy supplies in particular.
Biofuels are an important way of achieving both objectives, and EU member states should be congratulated not condemned.
