SIR - In March the EU decided that biofuel should provide 10 per cent of all Europe's transport fuels by 2020. Of course, no thought was given to how this would be achieved or the consequence of setting such a target.
The EU has no way to source biofuels from its own agricultural industry. As a result demand for imports of biofuel will soar. Palm oil is a very important source of biofuel.
The only way to grow the needed supply is to destroy more of the rain forests in the world and destroy the habitats of the animals, such as orangutans, which live there.
So keen is the EU to do this, it has confirmed that it does not plan to require suppliers to certificate if the production of biofuels has caused damage to rare natural resources. In other words, to satisfy the need to appear green, the EU is ready to sacrifice the developing world's environment and cause irreparable damage to the ecology of the planet.
